My artboard has a bit of an aroma to it.

All of our Coloring Artboards are laser cut on Baltic Birch plywood. The process is clean and consistent, but can leave behind a little bit of a burnt wood smell. We liken the smell to a campfire, but not nearly as intense.

My artboard is a little sticky.

Laser engraving/cutting is not that different from traditional woodworking. Instead of using a blade or chisel to convert wood into shavings or sawdust, the laser converts wood into ash. This leaves behind a beautiful dark color where material has been removed, but can sometimes leave behind a bit of residue. We don’t sand our artboards before shipping to minimize the amount of open pores in the wood, and thusly minimize the amount of warping and twisting of the boards. A light sanding with 180 grit sandpaper will remove the sticky texture if there is any when you receive your artboard.

How do I color my artboard?

The sky is the limit! We have used colored pencils, markers, acrylic paint, and even watercolor on our artboards, and every different medium creates a different feel on the finished board. When we ship our Coloring Artboards, we include a small pallet made of the same Baltic Birch plywood as the artboard. This way you can test colors and mediums before applying them to the artboard itself.

I bought a coaster some time ago, and now it looks a little dull.

Over time, slate coasters will start to get a little pale and dull. You can clean your coasters with warm water and mild soap, but if they are looking particularly lack luster you can use a tiny bit of food safe mineral oil to make them look shiny and new.
